CHAPTER SEVENTEEN-LUCAS
Aine insists on privacy, so I take her to my room. Closing the door, she folds her arms in front of herself.
âAre you sure of your choice?â She isnât judging. Aine is coming from a place of knowledge. I know her words donât have a double meaning or a hidden one. It still irritates me to be questioned, but I also need to remember she will be making up the next committee.
âYes.â
She nods and accepts my response. âI didnât want to bring this up at the table with Ella present, but the girls arenât doing so good Lucas. I donât know how much more time they have.â
I run my hands across my face. I knew they were being kept there, but to think of anything happening to them had my stomach twisting. Ella would be devastated if either of them was hurt.
âWhatâs happened to them?â I need to know if we can save them or are we better off letting them go?
âIâm not entirely sure but they have been left in Henryâs hands. Mark was the one who came to me. He asked me if I had a way to reach you then now would be the time.â
Mark is my fatherâs servant. What would prompt him to reach out to Aine? What was Henry doing to those girls?
âHenry has rooms under the shed. Thatâs where they are being held.â Aine looks uncomfortable and I donât blame her.
âBoth of them are being judged at the gathering for conspiring against Henry.â
I shake my head. My father was showing his true self. âIf they are, then they will be alive.â That had to count for something.
âShould be alive, Lucas. I just wanted to inform you, so you can tell Ella in a gentler way.â
âI wonât be telling her, none of you will.â I drive each word home so Aine hears me.
âI donât think that is wise.â
I want to reach out and grab Aine around her throat. âI donât care if you think itâs wise or not. I said she will not be told.â
Aine bristles but nods her head. âYour word is final.â
âYes, it is.â I state hoping to drive home my point. We would save Hannah and Jessie at the gathering. But Ella having that knowledge now, would be tormented. I would deal with her anger later. She didnât need to suffer unnecessarily.
âI also wanted to talk about the matter of Henry.â
I didnât want to talk anymore. The thought of Ella finding out about Hannah and Jessie had my stomach quivering. I couldnât let that happen, it would torture her to know they were being hurt.
âHe needs to be fully removed.â
âI will think about it.â
Aine isnât satisfied. âI left that book for you, Lucas. So you would understand the power you could wield.â
That surprises me, I had thought it was George. âYou want me to hang Henry because he is gay?â
Aine shrugs. âYou have a reason and the power. Why not?â
âNo.â I wasnât going to do it. We had to come up with a more fitting punishment.
